Here’s Why Lt General Bipin Rawat was Appointed
Military and defence sources said Lt General Bipin Rawat’s 10 years of hands-on experience in counter-insurgency operations and his stints at the Line of Control with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control with China had him appointed over the other two Lt Generals.
The appointment of Lt General Bipin Rawat as the 27th Army Chief had sparked speculations of why he was chosen over two seniormost Lt Generals, Praveen Bakshi and P M Hariz.
The opposition had questioned Prime Minister Modi over the decision and politicized the appointment.
Though the seniority principle was almost always followed in the past, it has never been a rule.
Military sources have stated his operational assignments as Commanding Officer of 19 Division in Jammu and Kashmir, his familiarity with the functioning of the Army HQ and Ministry of Defence in his capacity as Vice Chief and his general dynamism as reasons for his appointment.
It was also stated that it is the right time to appoint him, in the face of tensions between India and Pakistan at the cross-border.
Rawat’s 10 years of hands-on experience in counter-insurgency operations, and that he’d served at both the Line of Control with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control with China had him appointed over the other two Generals, who a top government official said, have very limited operational experience in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere.
