Old Rs 500 Notes Would Be Just Paper from Tonight
According to the Centre’s norms, Rs 500 notes will not be accepted for paying any kind of bills and will be of no use starting tonight.
The old Rs 500 notes will tonight move into history books and become just a piece of paper.
The notes would not be accepted to pay any bills starting today midnight as per the centre’s regulations.
After scrapping the notes from the market post demonetisation, the Centre announced old notes Rs 500 could be, however, used for certain activities such as paying utility and hospital bills and purchasing cooking gas cylinders.
It also included making payments in government hospitals for treatment and pharmacies there for buying medicines with doctor’s prescription.
Economic Affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das tweeted, “Exemptions for use of old Rs 500 notes will end on 15 Dec midnight. There will be no extension.”
The government had earlier withdrawn some of the relaxations such as booking railway or plane tickets using old Rs 500 notes.
Rs 1000 notes have been out of use now. At first the Centre had allowed the use of old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes for some specified activities for 72 hours after it announced the cancellation of the legal tender status on November 8.
However, on demand, the deadline was extended to December 15 midnight.
